Hi All,

Destination: Bheemeshwari (Off Kanakpura Road)

Round Trip: 161 Kilometers (Konankunte Cross to Destination and back)

Route Map: http://www.gpsies.com/map.do?fileId=zlansssgeskcvbws&referrer=trackList

Photos: http://picasaweb.google.co.in/harishaksbhat/19thSeptember2010RideTowardsBheemeshwariCauveryFishingCampNMuttati#

Number of riders: 3

Bikes used:
Deepan, Nitin = Trek 7100 Hybrid bikes.
Me = Merida MTB bike.

Night before the ride: Couple of ous (Deepan, Harsha , Naveen and Me ) decided to go to this ride on Sunday morning at 5।30AM from Merida Junction and I was suppose to join them at Konankunte Cross at 5.40AM. Had to go to the office on Saturday night so prepared the necessary items for ride before I left to the office. As we had a party in our office and I could not attend it because of personal reasons I stated back and took care of my process while other came back from the party. Naveen had given his bike to servicing and couldn’t get it back in time to join our ride, so we were just 3 off 4 now.

Ride day: Came back to home from office at 5।00 AM and was getting ready, received a message from Harsha stating “he would not be able to join because of the back pain”. I called Deepan and informed the same and shifted the initial meeting place to Konankunte Cross as Harsha and Naveen would not be joining us. Deepan informed me that another rider Nitin would join us at Konankunte Cross at 5.45AM. Took a bath and went to Konankunte Cross at 5.30AM and saw Deepan already at the point. Waiting for few minutes and saw Nitin joined us at exactly 5.45AM. We left Konankunte Cross to Kanakpura via Somanahalli, Harohalli covering a distance of 45.9 Kms from my place and reached Kanakpura around 7.30 AM. Had breakfast in Kanakpura and meet bunch of motorcycle rider riding towards Basavanbetta right off Halaguru. Left Kanakpura and reached Sathanur at 8.45AM. Nitin and me waited for Deepan to catch up and left towards Halaguru which was 11kms from Sathanur. Reached the cross in Halaguru where we were supposed to take a right towards Bheemeshwari at 9.30AM. Road to Bheemeshwari from Halaguru is excellent and covered with greener (Muttati Forest ) , during our ride to Bheemeshwari we came across elephant dung on the road and couple of spotted dears “ couldn’t take the snap as they were out of sight very quickly” and there are couple of steep descent . Reached Bheemeshwari (Cauvery fishing camp) at 10.40 AM and there was nothing but the Cauvery Fishing Camp in the middle of the forest, which needs an advance booking before coming to the venue. Took a photo of the entrance for documentation purpose and had couple of apricot brought by Deepan and were speaking to the gate keeper about the animals in the forest. Came to know that there are Black bear, Cheetah, Elephants, Spotted Dear, Peacocks and Monkeys in the forest. Knowing that we rode towards Muttati which is 6 kms away from this jungle resorts. Reached Muttati at 11.15AM and saw there were many people on the banks of the river and the water color had turned to green because of the contamination done by the visitors, few people were cooking the launch on the banks of the river. Stayed there for few minutes eating apricots and did not feel like getting into the water because of its pollution. Went to a store and drink thumbs up while Deepan and Nitin had some tea, bananas. Refilled our water bottles with water again as it was getting hotter and left towards Sathanur which was said to be around 18 kms from Muttati.

Riding back from Muttati to Sathanur was like hell as Sun was above our heads and it very steep climbs made the ride very difficult “ personal I felt climbing Nandi hills was easy” । Sun was laughing at us when every we took shelter under a tree shade and was angry again the next moment as we started to peddle. At last we reached Sathanur junction were one road lead to Mekedatu and other one to Kanakpura road. We refilled our water bottles again and it was 12.50PM already so we thought we can go to Kanakpura and have our launch. After coming to Kanakpura Main road Sun was not that effective so I rode ahead of our team and crossed Kanakpura as well and did not feel hungry but I was feeling sleepy because of the sleepless night before the ride as I was working. Deepan called me and informed me that he and Nitin would have launch at Kanakpura as they were very hungry. I continued riding towards Bangalore with few stops to eat banana and drink tinder coconut.

Finally, reached home at 3.50 PM and had bath and felt sleepy again. Eat a fruit and slept as my knees very hurting badly because of the climbs back all the way from Muttati to Bangalore.

RIDE REPORT: 4th September 2010 -> Ride to Yercaud (Tamil Nadu)

Hi All,

Destination : Yercaud

http://picasaweb.google.co.in/103479552858616934331/46Sep2010YercaudTrip466Km#

Bikes used:
Deepan, Shashi = Hybrid bikes.
Ramey = Merida MTB with Hybrid tires.
Prakash and me = MTB bikes.

1st like to thank Shashi, Deepan, Prakash, Ramey, Shashi’s brother Sridhar, his friend Sandeep and Shilpa for their wonderful support during this ride one or other way.

Night before the ride I had problem with my front lights and had to call Shilpa around 10.45PM to check if she had spare bike front lights. Was able to get it from her around 11.00PM and fixed it on my bike as there was possibility of riding ghats in dark.

I left my house early morning at 3.05AM and reached Konankunte cross waiting for Shashi to join me, we left Konankunte cross at 3.15AM and rode through Merida Junction were we met Prakash. We three rode together slowly towards Silk Board Junction were Deepan and Ramey were already waiting for us.

Five of us – Shashi, Deepan, Prakash, Ramey and me started off the ride at 4.05AM from silk board on NH7 and reached Krishnagiri as per our ride plan. During our ride toward yercaud we enjoyed the steep descent. At 7.30PM we were at our first breakfast point A2B hotel. Sridhar and Sandeep joined us around 8.15AM driving their car. Around 8.40 we left the place and rode towards Dharmapuri and we were following the ride plan and time as well.

After couple of hours of riding including some breaks I encountered my first puncher of the ride, that too right in front of a puncher shop to my luck. While I was getting my puncher fixed Shashi was eating Paddu (Cousin of Idli) and Masal Vadai. Ramey, Prakash were relaxing under a tree shade and Deepan was ahead of us at Deevattipatti Junction where we were suppose to take a diversion to Yercaud instead of highway.

We reached Deevattipatti after 20 min at 2.30pm and took left on the highway to reach Danispet village. We came across beautiful green landscape and a stream running across the road which in fact is the water which overflows from Danispet Lake. We washed our face and took some snaps and cycled our way towards Danispet. Reached Danispet and to continue our ride on road ahead there was a railway cross and it was closed, while waiting for the gates to open we drank tea. Few minutes passed but there was no train crossed or the railway gates opened (we did not want to cross the railway gates while they were closed – we followed rules) came to know that this gates will be closed always, we were like ……… waiting for the gates to open which never did, So we crossed the gates using a passage and reached a T-junction. We asked a locality and he said the right rode leads to Yercaud which was good enough for cycles.

I noted one thing common in the people, nobody knew how far it was to Yercaud road everybody were telling it was 2 kms, 4 kms and so on (may be they didn’t wanted us to be discouraged by telling us the real distance or the road condition of this route), but we pushed our way through and soon found our self riding through forest road filled with gravel, stones, plants and sometimes little footpaths which did not seemed to be in use for long time. We had to push our bikes for couple of kilometers due to the size of stones which was not making cycling possible. Deepan rode ahead in search of the tar road which leads to Yercaud. I and Ramey were riding together, Shashi and Prakash rode together for couple of distance and we found a stream again which we had to cross to continue our journey. We relaxed there for couple of minutes, Shashi and Prakash joined us. We again rode for couple of meters and saw Deepan coming back for us to tell that he has found a way which leads to Yercaud Rd and it is few kilometers away. We came to a forest checkpoint and right next to the check post was Yercaud Zoo (Kurumbapatti Zoological Park) which was closed for the day. We ate juicy pineapples, drink mango drinks and we were about to start the ride towards Yercaud Rd, Deepan found air escaping from his front wheel. It was fixed in couple of minutes and then we continued riding for couple of minutes to reach Gorimedu (Yercaud Road Junction).

We had almost covered 25 kms talking around 3 hours through the forest to reach the road to Yercaud Rd junction.
At 6.30pm we were at the base of the Yercaud ghat, I wore my luminous jacket, we took couple of snaps and started to climb and soon it got dark. I rode ahead with my own speed and found lonely on the road after few kilometers, took couple of minutes of rest while waiting for someone from the team to join me instead of riding alone. While I waited for others I eat dry fruits which relaxed me, it was so dark that I didn't even noticed a big monkey sitting right next to me, when I noticed I freaked out and maintained my distance from it. I saw a flashing light at a distance and it was Deepan. We climbed together for rest of the climb and took breaks for every couple of kilometers. Couple of kilometers later we ran out of water and there was no place to get water. I had made up my mind that I would keep my body as cool as possible as there was no water left and had to rely on dry fruits that I had. It started drizzling, we took shelter at a distance which was like a resting place for travelers, a couple stopped by to wear their rain coats and we asked them if they had water with them. They were kind enough to share their water; we filled our bottles with water and drizzling was also stopped. We continued for few kilometers and stopped midway, saw Shashi was hitching along with a motorbike for last 2kms and stopped after seeing us. He told us that he was informed that there was a Bison crossing the road ahead and he better be in a group then alone. Three of us rode together from there and water run out again. We found a hut in one of the coffee plantations and filled our water bottles there and it was 8.40PM when I checked my phone. Ramey and Prakash took a lorry which was climbing up because Ramey was bleeding because his grips in his paddle hit his leg and blood was not clotting. One of guys in lorry took a piece of cloth, dipped it in the hard water from the battery and applied it on the wound. The blood stopped bleeding immediately. The lorry reached us while we were resting and offered us a lift, but we declined and continued to climb. At around 10.15PM we reached the top and I felt happy to have finished the part of the journey. We rode to Lake Forest resorts were Sridhar and Sandeep had arranged for a nice dinner. We freshened up and had dinner and slipped into deep sleep soon after it.

The next day we went around Yercaud for sightseeing on our bicycles while Shashi went to Salem with his brother to meet his relatives. Rest of us went to couple of temples, view points and ride was again filled with uphill and downhill. We finished our ride and came back to resorts to keep our bikes and went to launch. After launch we went for paddle boating and came to resorts again, played table tennis and badminton for couple of minutes and soon mosquitoes started swamping us. So we went to our rooms to freshen up and have dinner. Deepan slept at around 8.00pm while I got all my stuffed arranged for morning ride again. At 9.30pm apart from Deepan went to hotel we have dinner but there was no rice so we eat parotas and dosa. As soon as I reached my room at 10.40PM I went to sleep.

Ramey had decided to reach Bangalore using bus so he stayed back and started his ride late and rest of started back from Yercaud at 4.15AM on Monday. We rode slowly till the base, stopped couple of times for snaps. The sky was so clear that we could see many stars and city was looking like Jewel. We met few people jogging at climbing uphill and exactly 52 people to be precise till the check post. Took snaps at the last hairpin just for the record.

Rode from Salem to Dharmapuri was uneventful and stopped multiple times for breaks and had tender coconuts at multiple places as well. Sridhar and Sandeep caught up to us and give us few cheeks and water and they went ahead in search of hotel. Just before we reached toll gate I encountered a puncture with rear wheel. A reflector piece was the cause of the cut in the tube. I removed the wheel and handed that to Deepan to get that fixed with the nearby puncture shop while a motorist offered a left till that place. We got puncture fixed and rode to hotel Kamath Upachar. While we got to the hotel Shashi and Prakash were about to leave towards Bangalore, Sridhar and Sandeep had already left to Bangalore as Sandeep had training at 3.00PM at his office. It was 10.40AM and we had breakfast and took rest for an hour and it was 11.40AM when we left Hotel and our next destination was Krishnagiri (A2B hotel). After couple of hours riding again around 2.30 we reached the A2B hotel. Shashi and Prakash were having launch and we joined them.

After the launch Deepan and me, Shashi and Prakash we were at different speed riding the Ghats from Krishnagiri to Hosur. It was pretty tiring and again took multiple stops before reaching Hosur. Around 20kms before we stopped at a dhaba to have some food and met Shashi and Prakash after couple of minutes. Heard from Shashi that his front wheel had a puncture and was delayed by that. We rode towards Hosur while they had tea. Reached Hosur at 7.00PM and the traffic there was in mess and vehicle coming in all direction because of the local traffic mixed with high way traffic, we had to ride carefully.

Me and Deepan reached Silk board junction around 8.45PM and went our homes. I reached home at 9.20 PM and came to know that Shashi reached around 9.30PM, Ramey reached his place at 1.00PM. My _ _ _ is still burning :). My mom barely recognized me after I reached home because of the sun burn.

RIDE REPORT : 15th August 2010 -> Ride to Thali (Hosur)

Hi All,

Destination : Thali (near hosur)
Photos: http://picasaweb.google.com/harishaksbhat/Thali#

We ( Naveen, Harsha & Me) went to a wonderful short ride covering 121 Kms. I started my ride from Konankunte as usually and came to our starting point where I meet Naveen and Harsha i.e. near Silk board fly over. Naveen and me came to the starting point at 5.45am as planned and were waiting for Harsha to join. He joined us at 6.10AM and we started off the ride at 6.11 AM towards Thali. The road to Hosur is in excellent condition as it a national highway , we reached Hosur at 7.10 AM and covered a distance of 33.4 Kms from Silk board junction.

We stopped at Saravana Bhavan Hotel to have our breakfast (idle , vada and pongal ). It was nice and tasty.

We had our breakfast and headed towards our destination for the ride – Thali . Just before Hosur Flyover there is a road to right which has leads to Thali.

Hosur to Thali road condition is excellent and it is 28.7 Kms from Hosur ( it was like to roller costar ride to Thali) . We were at a average speed of 23 kms per hour now enjoying the village side and seeing all the bill board and direction in Tamil language it was little difficult at first to make sure that we were in the right direction. Then I was able to make out Thali in Tamil on direction board by guessing and also confirming it with few localities.

Me and Harsha were ahead most of times and Naveen was behind us. Harsha is a strong ride to ride with as he got many years of riding experience on the saddle. After an hour of riding we were at Thali. There is not much to see in Thali as I enquired with some localities in Kannada J apart from a lake which is at the entrance of the village. Many people there speak Kannada as the village is based at the boarder of Karnataka and Tamilnadu.

Harsha and me spent some time waiting for Naveen to join us and had some cool drink. Harsha was talking about that he heard some riders saying that to avoid muscle cramps they have Pepsi or Coke, So we had it as well to test…. the thing was we were not that tired at all in the first place to encounter any kind of cramps….

Naveen joined us after 15min and he too had a Pepsi. We took some snaps there and left towards Anekal.

Thali to Anekal it is 19.0 km and encountered couple of uphill’s also road condition is bad for about 5 to 6 kms until we reach Karnataka check post.

From Karnataka check post to Anekal road is good and elevation of the road is not high. Initial we had seen some students in their school fields getting prepared for flag hosting, later by the day we came across lot schools celebrating Independence day by calling independence day slogans and inspirational quotes.
We stopped at Jigani for a short break , Harsha had tea while Naveen and me had Mango Sils and sweet made from dry fruits.
We headed towards Bannerghatta road taking a inside road skipping Bannerghatta Village and it was about 26.0 kms by the time we reached Gottigere on Bannerghatta road. We came across breath taking views of paddy fields also some farmers working.

After reaching Bannerghatta road Harsha rode towards his house which is located in BTM layout as it was getting late and was close to 1.00 PM. I waited for Naveen for few minutes as he was behind us.
Naveen and I rode towards Jayadeva hospital junction and I took left from Bannerghatta road towards my aunt’s place and then went to my home at 1.30PM. Later Naveen called me saying he reached his place. Overall it was a beautiful ride on Independence day.

Mysore solo Ride after great Nandi Ride..... 2nd August 2010...

Dear all,

After an awesome ride from Nandi on Sunday (1st August), rode my bike (bicycle) to Mysore and back and it was pretty awesome and tiring experience . I am really happy about my stamina now.
Actually had a plan to ride Mysore on 31st for which I had set my mind, but was not possible after seeing an huge list of riders making to Nandi on 1st August 2010 – I joined Nandi ride too. After reaching home at 6.30PM from Nandi on Sunday (Round trip of around 120KMS) I had a really good sleep for couple of hours and I dreamt about doing Mysore on next day.

Woke up early morning on 2nd August 2010 and started my ride towards Mysore through Kanakapura road @ 5.00 AM and reached Columbia Asia Hospital on Mysore ring road @ 2.30. ( this nine n half hrs ride includes all the breaks while riding towards destination.) Started the ride from Konankunte cross on Kanakapura road via Kanakapura , Sathanur, Honnaganahalli, Kollegala Main Rd, Bannur, Mysore Ring rd reached Columbia Asia Hospital. Took SH17 while coming back to Bangalore and reached Bidadi @ 11.55PM. Was really tired and began to have leg cramp so instead of continuing the ride back home, had to call my uncle to pick me up at Bidadi bus stand. While he was on his way to Bidadi I relaxed myself and also went into sleep for couple of minutes. After few minutes I was woken up by a honking sound made by a KSRTC bus. Waiting for another 20 min my uncle reached me and was driven back to his place in Bharathnagara on Magadi Road and it was close to 2 AM.

Did not do much after reaching his house apart from applying some pain killing cream to my legs, after that went to sleep and had set the alarm to ring at 3.00 AM again, as I had to reach my home on Kanakapura road as soon as possible to reach my office @ 5.00 AM on 3rd August. (my shift timing is from 5.00AM to 2.30PM). At 3.00 AM woke up and got ready and my uncle rode me to Magadi Main road where I managed to get a bus to Banashankari and was at Banashankari by 4.00AM. Cycled slowly for last 6 KMS & reach home @ 4.45 AM. Overall I was able to manage to ride for 250 KMs on single day. I am still feeling the pain in my leg muscles as I am writing this from my office desk J .

NOTE : Reflective jacket that i bought few days ago keeping this ride in mind really made me visible to others during the night ride .

Thanks & Regards,

July 11th 2010: GMC Practice Ride: Destination: Savanadurga

Hi All,

Sorry for posting this ride report late ( I was sick ). Thanks to Tandem Trails ( Sunil )for organizing this event.

Link to the photos. http://picasaweb.google.co.in/harishaksbhat/SavandurgaGMCPracticeRide11thJuly2010

Ride Day: Sunday 11th July 2010 ,
Location : Savanadurga

After riding cycle to work every day, planned to go for a little fun ride on weekend. I missed Bettadasanpura ride organized by Mr.Prabhakar Rao (GGI) as I had to work on Saturday L, so planned to join GMC practice ride to Savandurga.

It was raining cats and dogs from morning 2.30 AM till 6.15 AM on Sunday. As usually couldn’t sleep day before because of the excitement within thinking about the ride, but still managed to get 2 hours of sleep and woke up at 3.15 AM. Got ready and looked outside the windows and was little sad to see raining… messaged Shilpa as we had decided earlier to leave at 4.10AM from Konankuntta cross to reach Bangalore University which was our starting point.

Immediately I got a reply saying it is raining and Shilpa’s dad wouldn’t let her ride in this rain as she had returned home yesterday completely drenched in rain. I had packed up some of the stuff that I required during the ride as to be altered a little because I hadn’t through it would rain. I took my cycling rain jacket which I had purchased yesterday from Wheel Sports (but I never through that I would use it the next morning) along.

It was 4.10 AM and I was about to leave my house towards Bangalore University thinking this time I will be riding alone and I got another SMS from Shilpa that the rain has reduced a little and she would join me near Konankuntta cross ( not sure how she managed to convince her dad?) . I replied to her saying I would wait for her and was at Konankuntta Cross by 4.15 AM. Waiting for few minutes I saw a dim light at a distance coming towards Kanakapura main road ( I knew it was her - She was full of energy). She told me that another cyclist (Guruprasad) would join us and he is from BTM layout. We called him and confirmed that we are going to meet at Banashankari Bus Stop, confirming that we paddled our way to Banashankari bus stop in rain.

From Banashankari we (Shilpa, Guru & me ) took outer ring road and reached Bangalore University entrance by 5.15AM where Mr. Venu and few other where waiting for us, I had called Venu earlier requesting him to wait for us at the entrance, near police check post. Together we went to Bangalore University Library and joined with other cyclists. Had a coffee, bun and gulkan which was an early morning refreshment. We introduced among our self and started the ride at 6.30AM (by then the rain had stopped) . Mr. Sunil paddled his way towards the entrance of the university as he was not getting the cell phone reception for communicating with guys who would try and reach the starting point.

We headed towards NICE road, crossing outer ring road with the guidance by Badri. Route which was shown by Badri was wonderful, filled with greenery and less traffic. ( Big Thanks to him and his support while riding). I met Shreyas who was ahead of us all the time with his Fuji road bike. He was too good to ride with and also got very good tips from him.

At 7.20AM we were at the Big Banyan tree, while we were waiting for other to join we ( around 5 guys- Badri, Jayanand, Ramakrishna, Shreyas, Vijeth & me) decided to eat a bit. We had Idly which was available without cockroach flavor. By the time we finished our idlys we saw rest of the group coming in. While, they stood for taking a break we paddled our way to our next point - Manchanabele Reservoir .

Riding towards Manchanabele Reservoir we came across ISRO Space Center at Byalalu which was attacked by two gun men in the month of March 2010. (The ISRO Centre at Byalalu, about 40 kms from Bangalore, contains 2 India's biggest antenna to the skies and houses the Indian Deep Space Network.) There was couple of downhill en route to Manchanabele Reservoir and when we reached the Reservoir it was a breathtaking scenery, took couple of snaps and went towards Manchanabele Village.

Shreyas & Vijeth both rode ahead and accidently took the road towards Mysore instead of taking left towards Savandurga. Vijeth quickly pulled back as one of us called him but was not able to get Shreyas. Shreyas later joined u. I came to know that , he went 7 KMS ahead and he asked someone for directions since he did not find any of us following him. By the time Shreyas joined us we had done couple of Killer climbs enroute to Savandurga and almost reached SH3 main road.

Took a right at SH3 and rode for couple of distance till we found the direction to Savandurga. About 7.5 kms from main road to Savandurga, road is not that good especially for road bikes.
Shreyas bike’s front wheel got punchiered first and it was quickly repaired but took time to put some air into the front tire which required a 100 PSI force (pretty tiresome workout). After couple of kms Badri’s fezzari road bike got punchiered and this time it was back wheel. Last few meters to Savandurga was made by pushing the cycles instead of paddling them to give company to Badri (Puncher Specialist) .

While Badri fixed his tube we drank couple of tender coconut and relaxed ourself. Ones he fixed his bike we started off again from Savandurga we met second group of our cyclists who were riding towards Savandurga. I came across one of my best moment in my life when Shilpa gave me the LIVESTRONG band (yellow color) which I was dreaming off to get one ( It was a real Shock for me) . With that joy I reached SH3 main road and my MTB bike’s rear tube got punchiered. I replaced the tube with the help of Rama, Vijeth & Jayanand. Badri and Shreyas soon joined us seeing us fixing the tube. They had tea while I was packing the tools which I had opened for fixing the puncher then we left.

While we were riding back again Shreyas, Vijeth, Jayanand and Ramakrishna took a road heading towards Mysore (continued riding onSH3) instead of taking a left towards Manchanabele village.
Badri called up Shreyas, this time he picked his phone and Badri asked him and other to ride back and take a right which they had missed. While Badri and me were riding towards Manchanabele Shreyas and others joined us and Shreyas took off from there ( Riding ahead). We slowly paddled our ways towards Big Banyan tree crossing the killer uphill near Manchanabele Reservoir. After the uphill we stopped for couple of minutes to take a break, had some dry fruits which I carried and some bananas from Rama and continued our journey towards Big Banyan tree.

Ones we reached Big Banyan tree we had mango with some spicy powder, lemon rice and wade along with it. ( I can never forget the juicy taste of those mangoes in my life, my mouth is watering even now as I am typing this) . We started the ride again we saw Mr. Shamsher and others following him. We rode towards Bangalore University and guess want Badri’s bike encountered another puncher and it was right next to the previous puncher on rear wheel. We spent couple of minutes fixing it and reached the outer ring road. Badri, Rama and me had a cold drink while we waited for Jayanand and Vijeth.

Rama and me took off towards Mysore road through Bangalore University see-offing Badri, Jayanand. Ones we reached the Rajarajeshwari nagar circle on Mysore road, we took right towards Rajarajeshwari nagar and went on to Uttarahalli Main road , took left towards Kanakapura main road with couple of uphill’s again. Rama took left towards Padmanabhanagar and I continued my journey towards Kanakapura main road and reached home at 4.30PM.

Later called up Venu and found that he went in Car till commando hospital from Bangalore university and rode to home for about 8 KMS from there. Shilpa joined her parents at Chandra Layout and came back to home around 5.30PM.

I took an hour rest and went to club to play badminton at 6.00PM and came back home at 9.30PM and slept like a log, exhausted ………..
Kudos to all of them who rode along and also to those who rode to Savanadurga!!!!!.I really would like to thank Sunil again for putting up the ride plan and following it up with great enthusiasm and the entire bunch I was riding with for support throughout. So congratulations to all of them made it or even attempted. So until next time..... ride strong.

Cheers,

May 30th 2010 :long-ride: Destination: Nandi Hills

Hi all,

Ride Day:30th May 2010
Location : Nandi Hills

I would like to share my experience of riding to Nandi Hills which was done on 30th May 2010 , I have been wanting to post the ride report ever since I came back from the Nadhi Hills ride but was caught up with the regular work and also getting things arranged for my cousin’s marriage. I must say that when Yogesh (Bangalore Bikers Club Member) posted the Nandi ride on Google Group I was eager to join them but only concern was the time that ride would start. The ride was suppose to start from Cubbon Park at 6.30AM with some experienced riders and newbie’s .

Keeping the summer Sun in mind, me and munch of my cycling friends (Shilpa , Shashidhar, Krishna and Satish) decided to leave early on Sunday morning with a determination of reaching the Nandi Hills before Sun would take a toll on us.

Trip Details:
We had already made the plan that Shipa , Shashidhar and me would meet at Konanakunte cross (Kanakpura road) at 4.00AM and 2 others that is Krishna and Satish would join us at 5AM from Esteem Mall ( after Hebbal flyover) way to Nandi Hills and we were expecting to reach Nandi village at 7.30AM / 8.00AM keeping the pit stops for rest while our way to Nandi Hills.
Night before the long ride:
Packed all the required gears for the long ride and went to bed at 11.30 as usual, but I was able to sleep hardly for 2 hours because of the excitement running inside me thinking of the Nandi ride as I had heard by few experienced bikers that the Nadhi ride is one of the best and most challenging ride because of the 8 kilometers continues uphill.

Day of the ride:
Finally the alarm from my mobile phone went Off has it was set to ring at 3.30AM. Quickly I got myself from the bed and got myself ready and packed all the last minute stuffs like filling up the energy drink (mixture that prepared using Salt, Sugar ,Glucose and water ) into the water bottles that I required. Fixed the air pump to my bike and kept couple of bicycle tubes for replacing the puncher tube if there is any in between the journey.
Next moment I was on my bike, riding towards Shilpa house as she was little concerned of riding alone from our house to meeting point early in the morning. I meet her in the midway to her house and soon we both were riding towards our meeting point (Konanakunte cross) and saw Shashidhar was already waiting for Shilpa and me.

It was 4.10AM, wasting no time we were already riding towards next meeting point (Esteem Mall - after Hebbal flyover). The pre dawn ride was refreshing except for the sleeping dogs that wedid not want to wake up on the way. Soon reached the deserted Cubbon Park and we quickly made our way across to Hebbal flyover-esteem mall in about 1hr 15 mins. Krishna and Satish joined us, then we started off at a medium pace and reached the airport underpass - turn off to Nandi(State highway) at 7am. The ride till here was calm and without disruption. We took break to wolf down some yummy aloo-sandwich made by Shashi's wife and at this point out cyclocomps read 50kms in 3hrs at a pace of 16 kmph.We were also quietly celebrating the fact that none of the fast riders had over taken us yet....... we were actually looking out for other cyclists on the way but did not find anyone. But not for long, just after riding a few kilometers into the state highway, we had one of them passing us (Manu was his name and he was 53 years old). He gave me goose bumps as he being an elderly guy bypassed us.
After few distance I went ahead of my team at my own pace and saw Manu had stopped for taking few photo snaps of the Nandi hills covered with clouds which was a breath taking scene.

Finally at 7:10 am we had reached the turn to Nandi village and having to ride with a strong head wind that literally kept pushing the bike back, the last 2 kms to the nandi village turn was crazy andexhausting. But the exhausting really did not take its toll on me as I was riding with an experienced guy (Manu) talking about his experience of bi-cycling from last 40 years and I turned back to find that I was way ahead of my team, actually I had broken off and headed towards the base of Nandi hills, while the remaining 4 was coming at their own pace.

I quickly called Shashi over my cell phone to inform him that I would meet them on the Nandi top as I was few meters away from Nandi Base.

At 7.40AM reached Nandi base had energizer i.e. half bottle of water which was mixed with Sugar, Salt and Glucose made me re-freshing .

Headed towards the top of Nandi Hills and soon I found myself struggling my way across the hill curves all by myself as Manu had taken off ahead of me. All my way to the top I was thinking about the last 4kms which was told (Shilpa) to me that it is even tougher than the initial curvers. I reached half way 4kms to Nandi, stopped my bike and had again the reaming half liter of water and took off.
Slowly peddling my way to the top using 1st and 3rd gears from bike I saw the entrance to top of the Nandi hills which encouraged me to complete the remaining 2 kms.

Finally I was on the top of the Nandi hills and it really felt good, believe me…… all that pain I took to climb / ride the uphill was worthy.

I reached the top at 8.50AM . I saw Manu at the entrance wet and tried as well, we shook our hands to each other .He told me that this was really on hell of a ride and saying that we laughed and relaxed waiting for other team members to come. While I was waiting for other Manu started to ride back home as he had to reach his home early. Sea off’d him and started enjoying the scene around.

I meet munch of other professional riders on the top and it was good talking to them about the ride to the top. Few minutes later I saw my team mates coming to the top and went to them to congratulate on their completion of the task. First was me who took 50min, then followed by Krishna, Satish, Shashi and at last came Shipla who took almost 2 hours(10:30 am). We had couple of tinder coconut ,fried rice and curd rice to boost our energy to ride back home in the restaurant on the hill top. We took a big break > 2 hours and missed seeing all the folks that made it to the top in that time between 10:30 - 12:30
Way back from the restaurant I found Naveen my friend who also had come alone with a team from Marathalli was relaxing after a tough uphill ride of 2 hrs.At 12.30PM mid-day we left and Naveen also joined us in the ride back home. we started back down and took only 14min to cover 8kms and was a pleasant ride down. Made our way across the scenic but now hot state highway. So finally made it to the SH-NH7 junction by this time the heat was really on and energy sapping.ShiIpa had earlier decided that she would return by Volvo, and a brief tender coconut break, we headed off towards the airport exit ramp in burning heat and reached about 2:40pm.Shilpa, Shashi,Satish and Naveen took the Volvo to respective destination. Me and krishna decide to cycle back to our respective destination to kanakpura road(140 +kms) and Hebbal(100+) and reached my place at 5.10PM.I really would like to thank yogesh for putting up the ride plan and following it up with great enthusiasm and the entire bunch i was riding with for the jolly camaraderie and support throughout.Thinking of the ride, felt we gave away the early start we had and could have tried and make it back home before the heat turned up. But having said that, we would have been too exhausted to attempt it without a good break. So congratulations to all of them made it or even attempted. So until next time..... I have the memory of Inspirational Riding to Nandi Hills .

Thanks & Regards,
